Exploring Future Reality Workshops

NYC Media Lab has partnered with executives from media and technology companies, faculty from the City's universities, and startup founders to produce the workshop program at Exploring Future Reality. In these hands-on sessions, you’ll explore the latest tech, ranging from room scale VR to mobile AR application development to exploring how businesses are incorporating emerging media into their strategies. Workshops will be held across two sessions, from 2:00PM-3:00PM and 3:30PM-4:30PM at NYU Kimmel Center.

How to Generate and Pitch XR Ideas that Resonate with a Global Audience

The BBC editorial team will guide you through the idea generation process of successful XR projects that will resonate with a global audience. This workshop will showcase and discuss the production, challenges and distribution of the most ambitious AR and VR projects the team at the BBC is currently working on, focusing on idea generation and audience driven storytelling. The session will include brainstorming, followed by an idea generation game, sketching and acting of storyboards, developing ideas and pitching.

Build a VR Game in the Real World

In this workshop, participants will learn how to use virtual models of the real world from Geopipe to make a simple interactive experience. Participants will use Unity to combine a 3D model of New York City (or another city that Geopipe covers) with modules to explore an urban environment from a first-person perspective. Basic familiarity with Unity is recommended but not required.

Transitional Realities

How do we responsibly balance different realities? Mixed Reality (MR) offers an undeniable preview of a world dominated by ever-changing digital hallucinations. Eventually, our physical world will devolve into a generic canvas for an otherwise more magical world to exist upon. As we march towards an fully virtual way of life, we’re left with a transitional period marked by a combination of physical and virtual substances. What’s the best way to merge the two? This talk explores a variety of ways in which our existing infrastructures and daily patterns can be enhanced by MR. To do this, we’ll examine specific examples of spatial computing that demonstrate how MR can breathe new life into familiar objects.

Building Immersive WebXR Data Visualization with Geometric

Learn how to easily build and share immersive 3D experiences in minutes without coding using Geometric, a new software tool by Datavized Technologies. In this workshop participants will use the Geometric dashboard tool and learn the fundamentals of immersive data visualization and WebXR, how to prepare and clean location data sets, import and map geospatial data to a 3D globe for a 360° view of trends and insights, and customize a 3D project for presentation on the web and in virtual reality and mixed reality headsets. Each workshop participant will have access to Geometric.

Getting Started and Best Practices for VR

In this hands-on workshop targeting both those new to Unity and VR development as well as advanced and seasoned developers, you will learn about the recently published best practices (from the XRA.org association) along with a live coding tutorial using the VIU (Vive Input Utility) Unity plugin from the Unity asset store which is a toolkit that targets many VR headsets (not just Vive). This workshop is a mix of coding and lecture class; it’s highly recommended to bring laptops with Unity and plugin pre-loaded.

Build a Cloud-Connected AR App in 15 Minutes or Less

Workshop participants will learn how to create real-time cloud-connected augmented reality (AR) apps using the echoAR platform. Participants will be able to quickly create AR apps with no technical skills or coding required, and scale existing apps by connecting them to the cloud. Platforms for experimentation include: Google ARCore, WebXR, Vuforia, Unity-based apps, and more. Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop and an Android phone, or just follow along the live demonstration by the workshop leader.
